What is My Hair Texture?

    Ladies and Gentleman, I have been asked this question too many times to count since becoming licensed years ago…ESPECIALLY from people who are either wanting to transition or new naturalistas.

    First, let me start by saying this…I don’t know who decided to use numbers and letters to identify hair types; I chuckle when people use them, its the craziest thing…You know like 4c, 5j, 12d and the list goes on…

    Textures actually have names.  Either you have Straight, Soft Waves, Wavy, Tight Coils, Kinky, Curly, Coily, Tight Curls or Wiry texture…Some people even have a mixture of 2-3 textures, which is totally ok.

    So, how do you determine which type of texture you have? Follow these steps. Once you are done shampooing your hair; take a look at the texture closest to the scalp area. There you can really see the type of texture you have. You can use the illustrations that I provided below for reference.  Try matching your hair with this:
